YKHC Tobacco Prevention VISTA (Bethel, AK)

This VISTA member will be serving with the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) in Bethel, Alaska. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation is a privately owned, non-profit 501(c)(3) tribal health organization with a board of elected members representing various tribal communities within the region. The southwest region is comprised of 58 federally recognized tribes from 48 village locations ranging in population size of 28 to 1,133 residents. The urgent need for additional resources and tobacco prevention activities in the YK Delta are clear with 41% of Alaska Native adults using tobacco products. The YK Delta also has some of the highest poverty and unemployment rates in the country. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable illness and death, and has been strongly linked with several forms of cancer. The 2014 Surgeon General’s Report on the Health Consequences of Smoking estimated that the number of premature deaths attributed to smoking and secondhand smoke exposure exceeded 20 million in the last five decades. A successful effort to reduce youth initiation of tobacco and adult use of tobacco in the region will reduce costs (both direct and indirect) associated with tobacco use in low income households across the region.
