Barry University - STEM (FLCC)

This project aims to strengthen the relationship between Barry University and surrounding K-12 schools by enhancing STEM educational opportunities through partnerships between underserved and resourced schools in Dade County. In addition, the program includes the development and implementation of evaluation, communication and recognition strategies to create a sustainable, long term impact to STEM education initiatives going forward. These initiatives support increased student academic success, through education, leading to the alleviation of poverty in the area. The VISTA member will work with local teachers to develop programming that focuses on sustainability initiatives that enhance curriculum and engage students based on current needs. The member will work to recruit, select, train and evaluate student leaders to serve as program mentors and support research, assessment and evaluation goals. Data evaluation through reflections, surveys and feedback tools with a focus on STEM and the program's impact on poverty at the community level, will be developed throughout the year. The VISTA member will be responsible for creating long-term sustainability plans that include project improvement and expansion, increased awareness and recognition of university, school and community partners during the year of service.
