WI Association for Runaway Services

Applicants should visit the WAHRS website at www.wahrs.org (AmeriCorps link) and contact the site they are interested in (scroll down to AC Program Locations). Some sites will consider Full Time and Part Time Positions. Youth who run away are in desperate need of assistance. Most runaways are not running to some place, they are running away from a negative family situation. In some instances, they leave because of a family conflict, typically caused by lack of communication. Other times they are forced out of their homes by parents or leave to escape sexual or physical abuse. Returning a youth to this environment without an attempt at resolution can result in more running episodes, continuing family conflict, or even more tragic consequences. Runaway programs assist youth with their crisis and provide services to both youth and their families. Youth, who live on the street are in very high risk situations, with few resources and virtually no support system. WARS AC members provide street outreach services and response for referrals from police, schools, and youth serving agencies. Members frequent areas where youth congregate, such as parks, malls, stores, etc. Youth are provided with hygiene packets, food, transportation, clothes, educational materials, and referral services to provide them with safe alternatives to the street. The members also are available to police and schools, by responding directly to referrals. Trained members provide individual and family mediation to youth to aid them in securing and maintaining a safe living arrangement. Members also aid in shelters for youth who are unable to return home. Applicants should visit the WAHRS website at www.wahrs.org (AmeriCorps link) and contact the specific site they are interested in
