VT Youth Development Corps

The VT Youth Development Corps (VYDC) works through a network of youth-focused, community organizations to increase positive, skill-building opportunities that result in youth making healthy lifestyle choices. Members serve at teen centers, programs supporting youth in military families, afterschool programs, schools, and non-profit organizations. The Washington County Youth Service Bureau sponsors the VYDC. VYDC members address community needs by developing high-quality youth programs that promote healthy eating, exercise, academics, job skills, and connection to community. VYDC sites serve a wide range of youth: those who are homeless, low-income, failing in school, hungry and food insecure, lack adequate exercise habits, or need afterschool opportunities because parents are at work or are deployed overseas. All activities encourage youth leadership and include approaches such as nutrition, recreation, and arts programs; community service, mentoring, academic support, job training, agriculture programs, and more. VYDC program goals include, 1) Help communities increase youth participation in quality activities that encourage healthy, active lifestyles; promote job readiness; and support youth struggling with emotional issues, including the deployment of a parent. 2) Develop volunteer, programmatic, and financial resources to build and sustain valuable youth programs. 3) Help youth build connections to their community through service activities, increase their belief that they can make a difference, and give them the tools for lifelong civic engagement. 4) Develop systems to collaborate with military families and integrate youth in military families into existing community programs. VYDC provides members with meaningful opportunities to gain skills and experience for their service year and beyond, and supports members as they deepen their commitment to community service and develop a commitment to a life of active citizenship.

Member Duties : VYDC members are a highly effective means to solving the community needs. VYDC members interact with youth daily. They also research, develop, and implement evidence-based curricula; handle program logistics, including evaluation; create systems to replicate; maintain documentation; meet with supervisors and staff; interact with the community; recruit and manage volunteers; develop public relations tools and conduct community outreach; and seek in-kind and cash donations. Members collaborate with the community to develop strategies to support youth whose parents have been deployed overseas, develop programs to promote healthy eating and regular physical activity, promote service learning, and promote low-cost healthy food through agriculture. VYDC members are role models for youth; they inspire community members to volunteer or donate; and they promote sustainability by thoroughly documenting and evaluating activities.
