Community College of Allegheny County - PACC

The Program is designed to increase CCAC’s ability to assist low-income students who receive Federal Work Study funds with increased earnings and, through their employment in community service organizations, changing the lives of others living in poverty. Through the services of a VISTA the College aims to improve the economic conditions of students living in poverty as well as low-income non-students needing services from community organizations. In addition to increasing the number of Work Study students working in Community Based Organizations (CBO’S) CCAC believes that by placing students who are from these communities, and students who are majoring in social work, drug and alcohol, criminal justice, allied health, child and family services we can improve the breadth and quality of services provided by area organizations. The VISTA will work in collaboration with College staff to create a database of community service organizations, develop training programs, and proactively encourage students to participate in community service to establish, as well as enhance, their Student Engagement transcripts. Through this program, the College will positively enhance the economic status of Work Study students, increase student excitement and awareness of social issues related to poverty, and increase student involvement with community service initiatives. PA Campus Compact (PACC) VISTAs are part of a VISTA cohort of 30 members who are placed at higher ed. institutions across the state to build campus-community partnerships. PACC will provide professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the PACC*VISTA cohort throughout their year of service.
