AWU - Operation Jump Start - Volunteer Coordinator

The mission of the All Ways Up Foundation (AWU) is to help first-generation and low-income youth get into AND through college. By providing scholarships, support for other non-profit organizations and an annual leadership summit, we are working to bridge the gap between ambition and opportunity to break the generational cycle of poverty. The proposed VISTA project aligns with the CNCS Education focus area. The proposed project goals are to increase 1) the number of low-income youth of color who go to and graduate from college and 2) the number of graduates who are financially literate and have the skills required to pursue meaningful employment and/or a career and expects to benefit over 1,100 additional low-income youth by the end of the three-year project. The eleven VISTA members will serve at six different sites. Operation Jump Start (OJS) is dedicated to bridging the education achievement gap plaguing this region, focusing on the long-term development of the WHOLE student and creating an environment where students can triumph over their circumstances, succeed in school, and thrive in their lives. One VISTA member will develop procedural manuals for Volunteer Corps to improve agency student programming and fundraising efforts. The proposed project will recruit and match 75 new mentors with OJS mentees (grow from 75 to 150 one-on-one matched within three years), increase # of students served across OJS programming by double (from 400 to 800), and onboard at minimum 100 new volunteers to serve as members of OJS’ volunteer corps. (Duties to include: task force membership to execute fundraising events, provide student workshops, mentor and tutor students, provide technical/office support for OJS staff, strategically grow the OJS board, etc.). VISTA member will mobilize a large pool of volunteers via OJS’ Volunteer Corps to impact Long Beach at large via OJS’ mission to assist the most vulnerable students get in, stay in, and graduate from college.
