Native Craft Small Business Development (Bethel)

This project will have the VISTA create and promote websites, host business development workshops, help market Yup’ik made arts, crafts, and clothing. The VISTA will work with the Kuskokwim University Campus, Alaska Council on the Arts, and AK Small Business Development Center to set up workshops. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Region represents one of the most remote regions in the United States and is roughly the size of Oregon. The region is home to approximately 25,000 people. Approximately 86% of the population is Alaskan native of the Yup'ik Eskimo descent from the 56 Tribes in the region. We have retained the Yup’ik language and culture to a high degree with 10,000 people speaking Yup'ik as the first language. Many activities are planned to coincide with year-round hunting, fishing, and seasonal subsistence practices. Villages range in size from 50 to 1200 residents and 6000 in the city Bethel, the hub of the region. There are no roads connecting the villages and urban amenities are unavailable in many villages. The cost of living in rural Alaska is much higher due to the distance from major urban hubs. All supplies must be flown or barged in during the limited ice-free summer season. **Benefits include: Monthly living allowance ($1222), relocation costs ($0.34/mile up to $1000) and settling in allowance ($550) for members moving 50+ miles, health benefits, child care assistance, all expenses paid training in Los Angeles, and an Education Award ($5,645) or cash stipend.
